Hundreds of artists have entered the Southern Tier Biennial (STB) over the years allowing the creation of exhibitions that showcase the vitality and diversity of contemporary art in the region, and the 2015 STB delivered another exceptional exhibition. The exhibiting artists were: Robin Caster Howard (Alfred, NY, earthenware), Wayne Claypatch (Owego, NY, oil painting), Trish Coonrod (Ithaca, NY, oil painting), Tracy Fiegl (Fillmore, NY, wood), Hall Groat II (Endwell, NY, oil painting), Phil Hastings (Silver Creek, NY, digital print), David Higgins (Corning, NY, oil painting), Jill Johnston (Fredonia, NY, animation), Chrissy Lapham (Corning, NY, sculpture), Shawn Murrey (Arkport, NY, installation), Amanda Parry Oglesbee (Wellsville, NY, oil painting), Gina Pfleegor (Corning, NY, oil painting), Lin Price (Spencer, NY, acrylic painting), Hannah Shea (Freeville, NY, watercolor), Christine Sullivan (Elmira, NY, oil painting), Austyn Taylor (Alfred Station, NY, ceramic sculpture).
For the last ten years, STB has offered an exceptional opportunity for resident artists to enter a juried art competition and exhibition. The jurors in 2015, Bleu Cease, the Executive Director/Curator of Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) in Rochester, New York and John Massier, the Visual Arts Curator at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, New York, reviewed submissions of 170 works from over 60 artists. They selected work that continues the tradition of presenting a diverse group of artists for this regional survey of contemporary art in the nine counties of New York State’s Southern Tier. The STB is produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, in collaboration with the Olean Public Library, Jamestown Community College, and the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, made possible by an endowment from the estate of F. Donald Kenney.
